Description

To all Eco-Schools in Portugal was launched the challenge to produce a field form to identify Portugal Mushrooms. This form will be distributed to the entire Eco-Schools network and will help in identifying some of the most representative mushrooms in Portugal, can be used, for example, as teaching and learning materials in schools. In order to achieve this challenge schools are motivated to gather records of local biodiversity (including mushrooms). These records, with photographs will later be validated by experts.

Methodology

Children and young people from Eco-Schools, guided by their teachers will perform research on mushrooms of Portugal. Using one or more field trips, records are made in www.biodiversity4all.org, regarding the biodiversity around the school, photographing and identifying the mushrooms found in the region. After that will be drafted a proposal for a form field "Portugal Mushrooms" by following the instructions provided in the design of the regulation available in www.biodiversity4all.abae.pt. The best works of the participating schools will be rewarded with the editing of the best field form.

Objectives

- learn to know and identify mushrooms of Portugal;

- Motivate children and young people for activities in contact with nature and to get more knowledge about Biodiversity;

- Make available to all interested participants information on mushrooms of Portugal.

Dates

Since people often make trips to see and collect mushrooms in the autumn, it’s our objective to make the official launch of the field form "Portugal Mushrooms" on the Eco-Schools Green Flags Awards in October 2015.

About the author

ABAE / Eco-Schools

Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa (ABAE) coordinates the Eco-Schools Programme in Portugal since 1996. It is an international program (present in 59 countries) that is intended for all levels of education (from pre-school to higher education). Its methodology inspired by the principles of Local Agenda 21 aims to ensure the participation of children and young people in decision-making, involving them in building a school and community more sustainable.

Support, training, monitoring and evaluation of the Eco-Schools Programme are carried out by ABAE with the support of the National Commission, Eco-Schools and districts where the school is located.

Every year are released to the Eco-Schools network projects, challenges and contests to which the registered schools can join. The challenge "Mushrooms of Portugal" is part of this set of initiatives aimed mainly to motivate the approach of certain subjects, develop specific methodologies and to provide equipment for schools (in the form of awards) that contribute to the quality and continuity of the Program in each school.

Associação Biodiversidade Para Todos

Associação Biodiversidade Para Todos is a nonprofit association whose mission is to boost BioDiversity4All project. Giving its contribution to scientific knowledge, the public understands better the need and importance of conserving and interact with nature in a sustainable way.

Currently the www.biodiversity4all.org includes more than 200,000 observations of species recorded for over 2000 users and partners

Budget and due dates

The funds obtained in this crowdfunding will be used to: 1. designing the field form 2. printing 4000 copies of the field form of Mushrooms of Portugal which will be distributed to the entire Eco-Schools network (about 1400 schools) 3. reward schools with the top three entries in the challenge Mushrooms of Portugal (http://biodiversity4all.abae.pt/) The graphical output is expected to be ready in early July 2015 and in September 2015 will be sent for printing. 4. begin a project about mushrooms production by recycling coffee grounds NOTE: If the target is achieved and the quality and diversity of the work of the Eco-Schools is justified, 2 field forms could be edited with mushrooms from different regions of Portugal.
