Those who work in Education, who have children, grandchildren, small nephews and nieces, easily perceive that the lives of children are increasingly becoming a routine. Through my work with children of school age, I realised how society needs to provide constant activities, both at the physical and intellectual level, to help develop their potential. However, between school, English classes, music, ballet, football, swimming, … our children are always guided! There is no room anymore for children to interact with each other and conduct their own activities, guided by their imagination.
“O Mundo do Recreio” aims to be precisely that, a space where children from 0 to 12 years old are free to socialise with each other. It detaches itself from the formal educational system, providing a family environment rather than a school one.
It is a baby-sitting service, 24 hours per day, seven days a week, with a dual-rate system.
Our motto, that will guide all our activities, is ‘Giving Children Time to Grow’.
Nowadays, children of school age have very little time to just play, without other worries. Their tight schedules have them running to and from different activities, imposing obligations, to an extent that they don’t know how to just ‘be’ anymore.
Therefore the objective is to create a space and a time completely free of obligations, so that the children can learn about themselves and engage in the activity that seems right for them at the time. Freedom will not be unconditional though, one limit will be established: all the available activities aim to promote natural socialisation, through board games, ‘make-believe’ games, etc. There will be no solitary activities.
Without impositions, routines or any other form of pressure, children will be encouraged to interact with each other in a playful way.
Time is at the centre and is the most important concept of this project. Children need time for themselves; there must be time to grow-up.
