A new space for the pigs who live in Quinta das Águias: a new house with plenty of environmental enrichment, which will provide a greater quality of life to its residents and good didactic moments to visitors
Besides being a refuge for flora and fauna, Quinta das Águias is also an agent for change in the region of Minho. With the support of the Paredes de Coura municipality, Quinta das Águias has an important pedagogic role at a local level, promoting awareness about the values and practices of sustainability in children and adults.
In its sanctuary, which currently houses about 130 animals, there are four pigs. Bolota, the oldest, came to Quinta das Águias when she was very young, after starring in a television show. After the shooting of the show, Bolota should have been returned to her breeder and eventually slaughtered for human consumption. However, her TV colleagues grew attached to her during filming, so they bought her and decided to look for a place where she could live all her life, which was no easy task, as no farm was willing to house Bolota under the commitment of never slaughtering her for consumption. The production’s appeal reached Quinta das Águias, and Bolota found herself a home. Miss Piggy is Bolota’s companion and, recently, two more pigs joined the large family of Quinta das Águias: Belly and Jelly. When Belly and Jelly arrived, they were skinny and fearful of human company. Nowadays, they are extremely friendly and curious, seeking the company of other animals in Quinta das Águias.
The current living conditions of these four animals are far from perfect. Bolota and Miss Piggy share an enclosure which is no longer adequate for them, both in terms of space and safety as, despite several patches, the fence might collapse any time soon. Belly and Jelly share a very small enclosure of 45 square meters, that doesn’t give them enough space to run and carry out other natural behaviours. On the other hand, in case of a fire or any other disaster, the pigs cannot leave their current location, as the ground is deeper than the surrounding environment.
This crowdfunding project is gathering money for a future enclosure where the four pigs will live, as well as some of its environmental enrichment. In this new space, the four pigs will be able to run, play, and explore their surroundings, which will include some woodland, a lot of vegetation, trees, slopes, and a natural pool, where the pigs will bathe.
Besides giving these animals better quality of life, this new enclosure will allow Quinta das Águias to expand its pedagogic activities. Quinta das Águias regularly receives school visits concerning environmental education projects. The new enclosure will allow children to go into the same space as the pigs and to interact with them, feeding and petting them, while learning more about these fascinating animals, about whom we know so little.
We are counting on you to help us improve these animals’ life conditions. Please contribute and share. Thank you so much!
