Project BANG - The Best Arm for the Next Generation is Education

Bang wants to strength the educational system from the 7th to the 9th year through the promotion of the following sessions: study accompanied, artistic activities and project development.

The Project BANG has as main goal to strength the educational system from the 7th to the 9th year in Cape Verde, Praia. It has as expected outcomes to reduce the number of cases of drop outs of school and disapprove of the school year. This project is composed by three different sessions:

- Study accompanied: moment in which student can do their homework, study to their tests and exams and take doubts accompanied by two adults (it happens twice a week, with the duration of two hours);

- Artistic activities (theatre, dance and music): moment in which students have time and support to develop artistic activities of their interest, from theatre pieces to musical shows, with the support of two adults (it happens once a week, with the duration of two hours);

- Project development: promote the realization of a project which will be directly related to a crucial factor for the sustainable development of Cape Verde, with the support of two adults (it happens once a week, with the duration of two hours).

The project BANG will enter in Cape Verde through a pilot to be implemented in a school located in Praia (capital of Cape Verde), in the last trimester of the year 2016/2017. This pilot consists in the implementation of the sessions previously mentioned from 17th of April to 23rd of June of 2017. 

During the pilot project it is going to be created the pack BANG, this pack will be the product of the project. This pack includes: the planning of the sessions realized, the main implementation difficulties felt, the alterations realized to overcome those difficulties, the outcomes reached with those alterations, an operational control system for the project, a methodology to analyze the impact of the project and a report of evaluation of the pilot project to be used on bench marketing. The pack BANG enables any school to initiate the project with: a defined structure, a group of expected outcomes, alternatives when implementation problems emerge and ways to control the project implementation, as well as its impact. The pack BANG is going to be available for sales.

Besides that, we will have a consultancy service of implementation available for the clients. This service will give: support in the implementation of the project through weekly meetings with the duration of around one hour (through Skype) and support in the monitoring and impact evaluation of the project with two hours of work realized outside Cape Verde. The consultancy service of implementation enables: support in the overcome of new challenges that can arise in the implementation of the project, improvement of the outcomes through the sharing of experiences and discussion of ideas, as well as to guarantee the monitoring of the project and its impact.  

There are two groups of clients of the project BANG: schools and organizations that promote education in Cape Verde.

About the author

My name is Inês Cardial, I am finishing my masters in Social Economy in Católica Porto Business School and I have done my bachelor in Management in Nova School of Business and Economics. I lived in Cape Verde for 5 months, since the end of July to the middle of December of 2016.

First, I was a volunteer through an AIESEC program in the first ONG of Cape Verde, Citi-Habitat, where I developed a project to dynamize an agricultural cooperative. Afterwards, I did a three month internship in ACARINHAR, an association that promotes the integral development of children and young with cerebral palsy. In ACARINHAR, I was responsible for the planning of the association, the dynamization of projects with possible partners and the organization of events.

I already worked with children and young people in the past in volunteering activities. 

The volunteers will have or educational backgrund or experience in the educational area, since it is a crucial element in the development of the project.

Budget and due dates

February:

• Buy trip Lisbon - Cape Verde: 250 Euros
• Find 1 international volunteer that will support the first half of the pilot project - 200 Euros.

March:

• Find 1 international volunteer that will support the second half of the pilot project - 200 Euros.

April:

• Support for my home, food and daily costs - 500 Euros;
• Find 1 international volunteer that will support the expansion phase of the project (selling pack BANG and the consultancy service) - 200 Euros.

May:

• Buy trip Cape Verde - Lisbon: 250 Euros;
• Support for my home, food and daily costs - 500 Euros.

June:

• Support for my home, food and daily costs - 500 Euros.

July:

• Support for my home, food and daily costs - 500 Euros.

February - July:

• Operational costs of the platform - 400 Euros.

If we are able to overcome the essential value to start the project BANG, three quarters of the extra value will be used to the development of the activities of the pilot project and a quarter will be used to support my stay in Cape Verde.
