Academic Experimental Short Film | A young man delves into the fragmented worlds of his own mind, confronting versions of himself on a sensory journey to integrate everything he has ever been.

Synopsis

A young man delves into the deepest territories of his mind, where the multiple facets of his identity, sexuality, and mental health reside. Confronted with the parts of his identity that intimidate and shame him, he embarks on a journey of self-acceptance.

In each foray, he confronts versions of himself that challenge, seduce, guide, and sabotage him. Through a sensory, metaphorical, and constantly evolving experience, the inner battle is materialized.

A journey not to discover who one should be, but to integrate all that one has always been.

The Project

Metanoia is an experimental short film that transforms a young man's internal conflict into symbolic, intense, and mutable universes. Each space is an emotional landscape, a sensory reflection of fears, desires, and parts of identity that struggle with each other.

This project combines performance, metaphorical aesthetics, and an immersive visual and sound construction, proposing a narrative where the interior becomes exterior. It is a work that seeks to explore the complexity of the self through a free and profoundly sensory cinematic language.

Today, more than ever, it is essential to tell stories that embrace the complexity of the human experience.

We live in a time when issues such as identity, mental health, and vulnerability are finally emerging in public discourse, but remain shrouded in stigma and silence. This project seeks to give form, body, and voice to the internal battles that so many people face: silent confrontations that sometimes find no space for representation.

By employing experimental language, metanoia creates a territory where emotions are transformed into image, movement, and environment, allowing the audience to identify with what they see and feel what they often cannot verbalize.

About the author

Team : Giulliane Cavalcante, Margarida Barbosa, Martim Abrantes Diogo, Rocha Sepúlveda.

We are four finalists from the Bachelor's Degree in Communication Sciences — Specialization in Audiovisual and Multimedia at the University of Minho, in Braga.

As a group of emerging creators, we are at a crucial moment in our academic journey: the Final Course Project. This project represents the culmination of everything we have learned, but also the first step towards what we want to build in the future.

Without external funding, we rely on the support of those who believe in new independent artists. Every contribution brings us closer to realizing this vision.

Budget and due dates

Producing an audiovisual project is, by nature, a laborious and expensive process. In the case of an academic project, this need becomes even more evident, since the available resources are limited and depend, to a large extent, exclusively on its creators.

To achieve metanoia with the aesthetic quality we desire, we need support that allows us to reduce production costs and secure those that are unavoidable.

Scheduling

  • Pre-production: currently underway.
  • Filming: scheduled for April 2026.
  • Post-Production: April/May 2026.
  • Announcement and Launch: starting in June 2026.

How will the funding be used?

This project is entirely academic and has no institutional funding. The amount raised in this campaign represents the minimum necessary to ensure that we can plan and execute the project to a professional standard.

The campaign aims to fund:

  • Cast [9.4%]
  • Art Direction (sets, props, sensory elements) [14.1%]
  • Costumes and Makeup [9.4%]
  • Technical Equipment (lighting and sound) [14.1%]
  • Logistics and Transportation [18.8%]
  • Team Nutrition [14.1%]
  • Unforeseen Events and Additional Needs [4.7%]
  • Production and Shipping of Rewards to Supporters [7%]
  • PPL Commission [8.4%]

Our main goal is to reduce the individual workload of the four team members. Any support above the established target will be extremely welcome and will allow for greater creative and technical flexibility within the group.

The funds raised will be used entirely to ensure the project achieves the aesthetic, sensory, and emotional impact it deserves... and so that four graduating students can create the best possible work.

If you are unable to contribute financially, there are many other ways to help: follow us on social media, share the campaign with friends and family, or spread the word about the project in your communities.

Every little bit helps.
