The Egotist

"A versatile mind in a restless generation"

The Egotist is a short fiction film inspired by excerpts from the book This Side of Paradise by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Poor and tired, Amaro finds himself in need of moving. Along the way he takes part in conversations that make him reflect on his changing position in society and the anxieties of a young adult.

Cinema, like any art, has the power to express emotions, socially, politically, among others, and it's considered that this is the right moment to bring this story to the screen since, a century after the release of the original book, the anxieties and questions expressed by the protagonist remain relevant in the current context.

The Egotist features a focus on dialogue, a choreography between the actors and the camera, and an intimate original soundtrack, which all come together in an approach of temporal ambiguity that emphasizes and exposes the generational transversality of ideas, feelings and anxieties related to a world full of social and economic challenges.

About the author

The Egotista emerges as the final project of the Master's Degree in Cinema and Photography - Specialization in Fiction Cinema at the Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design (ESMAD), being an important step for several members of the team in completing the course and transitioning to professional life in the area of culture.

The project will be produced in Póvoa de Varzim, a municipality that will host the technical team and cast during the production days.

ESMAD, based in Vila do Conde, "is a national and international reference in the training of competitive, creative and innovative professionals in the fields of Cinema, Design, Photography, Multimedia and Web."

NÁVIO: Núcleo Artístico de Vontades Inusitadas e Outras is a creative structure in the field of performing and audiovisual arts founded in Porto, in 2021, by final year students of the theater course at ESMAE: Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo, as well as by friends and acquaintances from other artistic walks.

As a youth association, NAVIO's mission is to create performative and audiovisual works from the perspective of new generations and, through a public service, bring new ways of thinking, seeing and making art to the cultural environment.

Budget and due dates

The production of The Egotist is divided into several phases:

1. Pre-Production: until February 10, 2025
2. Filming: February 11-18, 2025
3. Post-Production: February 21st to June 6th 2025
4. Distribution: from August 2025

In a country that allocates less than 1% of its state budget to culture, artistic practice is largely dependent on private support, be it patronage, donations or partnerships.

In order to produce The Egotist , we need support to reduce production costs and cover those that are unavoidable.
