Housing with dignity. It is with difficulty that I describe a sad and difficult living condition, lacking even the most basic comfort and dignity.

Hello,

This is a difficult reality that I experience intensely.

My name is Rui Oliveira, I live with my wife and son, the total family income is currently €600.88. I am 61 years old and unemployed with no income. My wife is 52 years old and is receiving unemployment benefits (€600.88) which ends in August. My son is studying and is 18 years old. We have fixed expenses: paying the mortgage (which we bought a few years ago) €274.98 per month, paying for electricity, water, and medication; we have little left over for food.

The possibility of finding employment is very small. To earn some income, we work from home making rissoles and other savory snacks (products that we sell fresh and deliver to people's homes). Because they are handmade, they take a long time to make and are sold for €3.50 a dozen, generating a profit of €1.00 per dozen for us. It's not much, considering that the process of cooking the dough, preparing the filling, shaping, and coating the snacks (rissoles) in breadcrumbs yields approximately 3 to 4 dozen per hour with the help of our customers, and then there's the delivery. It's not a profitable business, but it helps to have some income.

Given our financial situation, we are unable to carry out any renovations on the house. At the moment, it is in very bad condition with rain inside, dampness, mold, cold, ceilings collapsing, and the roof sagging.

I need your help with small jobs like repairing the roof, installing sealant in areas exposed to rain, and other minor repairs.

I am grateful that you read my appeal. If you can help or tell others who can, I would be sincerely grateful.

Yours sincerely,

Rui

About the author

Hello,

I am Rui Oliveira, I am 61 years old, I live with Conceição Coelho and my son Emidio, we are married and have lived together for 20 years, and we have lived in this house since our union.

I worked in sales, started a small business that wasn't viable, and recently worked in sales in the energy sector for the company G9 Energia, but the commissions don't cover expenses, which is why I'm currently unemployed.

My wife, Conceição Coelho, is a textile engineer and worked until the company went bankrupt; she is currently looking for a job.

My son, Emidio Oliveira, is a student and is finishing his year; if we can manage it, he will go to university.

Budget and due dates

The costs involved in carrying out the minimum necessary works to prevent the collapse.

Protecting the roof to prevent collapse and installing sealant to keep rain out of the bedrooms will cost at least €30,000.00. The work will be carried out at the beginning of spring and may take 20 to 30 days.
