My name is Sofia Ferreira and, with my husband, Kent Mitchell, we created the Sanctuary/Association of Protection of Animals, Wigglestail Animal Sanctuary.
We are in love with animals and since 2006 that we adopted 3 cats when we lived in England, those 3 cats quickly turned out to be 4, and then 2 more rabbits and, when we moved to the United States, 2 more cats and a dog
However, it was when I moved to Portugal with all of those animals that I realized the gigantic problem that is animal abandonment here and the importance of their protection. We then started finding abandoned dogs on the streets, which we rescued and rehabilitated (some of them were in a very bad condition). Meanwhile, we grew so big that the house where we lived was not enough for us, one child (that child became two) and all the cats and dogs that lived there.
At that point, we decided to buy a house to rehabilitate with a big plot of land, and all with our own funds, we built dog shelters (the numbers continued to climb), cat shelter, fences, and in the meanwhile, shelters for all other animals we started to rescue which includes horses, a donkey, rabbits, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens.
Even though up until now all of this was paid by us, including food and veterinary visits, we reached a point where it is not enough. So we created in our first October profit organization and sanctuaryla (Isabel Bella) Wigglestial who turned 11 on the 20 th last.
The sanctuary now needs new shelters for our current residents and for the potential future ones, we also need to be able to pay for all veterinarian bills and keep all of their shots and tests up to date. At the end of the day, we just want the animals that live here to be happy and healthy and for that to be accomplished we need to create a healthy environment. Even though our initial investment reached those goals, we soon had to invest more in more fencing, more food, more veterinary visits, and of course maintenance expenses. The shelters we built are already in need of repairs, others need to be rebuilt and that is the reason why we need your help, so that our residents are even happier.
