My name is João Soares, I'm 27 years old and this campaign aims to raise funds to carry out innovative treatments abroad, in order to regenerate my kidneys.
On March 31, 2019, I was diagnosed with a rare disease worldwide called atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. This disease, linked to the blood structure, contributed to the severe deterioration of my kidney function. That day, I ended up in intensive care with pneumonia, high blood pressure (200 mmHg/110 mmHg), blurred vision and kidney failure (my kidneys were practically not producing urine). My world, that of a 24-year-old young man, had fallen apart.
In the meantime, I started hemodialysis treatment. Guess what? I cried in hemodialysis sessions. It was a feeling of emptiness, rottenness, hurt. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between 7pm and 10pm, there I was in the clinic "lazing around here", I mean laying down with tubes connected to me, in order to purify my blood. What about dialysis machines? actually, they produced a deafening sound. I couldn't take it anymore. Besides, seeing young people on the beach having fun as I rode the ambulance to the clinic reduced me to an insignificant being. Empty. Later, in September 2019, I entered the peritoneal dialysis system, a type of dialysis in which I could change fluids in the comfort of my home.
After so much suffering, I found a tremendous strength that caused me to find a clinic based in Fountain Valley, California, United States of America. The doctor I spoke to, who is also the director of the aforementioned clinic, said that given my analyses, my illness, my age and lifestyle, there was a good chance of success. This way, this doctor informed me about the composition of the treatments (approved by FDA, the North American agency responsible for the approval of therapies and medicines) and their price. These treatments encompassed umbilical cord stem cells (from a compatible donor) and exosomes (particles with regenerative properties).
And...Eureka! in the first tests in march after returning from the USA, my creatinine (a toxin in the blood that measures kidney function) had dropped approximately one point from the last tests before departure. My urine flow had increased from 1.5 average daily liters to 2.5 average daily liters! Over time, these results have improved so, in October 2020, peritoneal dialysis was discontinued. In April 2021, my peritoneal dialysis catheter was finally removed.
However, you ask me: "so, don't you have the problem solved once and for all?". No, I don't. Because despite having been out of dialysis, I am currently in stage 4 of chronic kidney disease (actually, there are five stages), which means that my kidneys already have autonomous and independent capacity to do their work. Unfortunately, they are still severely damaged. The "ghost" of dialysis still hangs over me. And I'm sure of one thing: I don't want to suffer. Never again. I am determined, once again, to go to the ends of the world to treat myself. For this, 11 000 euros are needed (treatments + accommodation + flights (round trip) + transfers), cheaper because it is a second time. This time the location is Tijuana, in Mexico.
Of course, you also ask me: "so, why don't you have to do again those treatments in the USA?". The answer is quite simple: because, with the recovery of the economy in this country, the cost of treatments has increased. So it pays to have two treatments in Mexico for the price of one treatment in the US. Same procedures, same clinic, same doctor. Only in different places and with different composition. This time, it goes to 200 million stem cells, instead of 60 million the first time.
Think about this: by helping me, you are "opening doors", a new hope, so that, in the future, more people around the world can enjoy these treatments with a huge potential for kidney regeneration, as well as other diseases, namely the treatment of myocardium. This could be revolutionary both for science and human beings. I really want to get my "soldiers" back. Because I don't leave any soldier behind. I want to help others with my example, with my leadership. Attached, I send documents that support my positive clinical results. Can I count on your precious help?
