Because Prevention is the Best Medicine!

Prevenir é o Melhor Remédio, aimed at combating social isolation and promoting active ageing, acts to prevent domestic accidents among the needy population, guaranteeing access to technical assistance.

If the sense of neighborhood no longer exists, the support networks are getting smaller and there is a decrease in social interaction, which translates into the consequent isolation... Why not a project that can contribute to the reinforcement of these networks, the resumption of interaction ?

Prevenir é o Melhor Remédio is a pilot project in Portugal, created following the Vizinhos project and focused on combating social isolation and promoting active ageing, within the scope of preventing domestic accidents among the needy population, ensuring access to support materials/technical aids.

We are referred to more and more people who live in unfavorable security conditions for the maintenance of their Activities of Daily Life, which in themselves already represent some degree of dependence. Vulnerable people with increased risk factors for the occurrence of accidents that will eventually increase their degree of dependence.

The project revolves around three major axes: referencing , evaluation and intervention .

Every month we receive referrals from people who need adaptations (through technical assistance) in their homes to prevent domestic accidents, which is why our stock is currently quite low.

About the author

Passo Positivo , headquartered in Matosinhos , was born in 2010 through the willpower of a group of friends who voluntarily built and developed it.

Our mission is to guarantee the safety and well-being of vulnerable people or people who work in crisis situations, bridging the lack of support in complementarity with other institutions, promoting the increase of their skills and creating an impact on different generations for the exercise of citizenship global.

In this sense, we have four major projects:

• The Diaper Bank where we collect and donate diapers, as well as training activities on the proper use of absorbent material for incontinence.
• Neighbors , for the prevention of domestic accidents among people with functional disabilities. We carry out home visits and assign support material in order to prevent domestic accidents.
• Prevenir é o Melhor Remédio , whose objective is to increase the access of the senior population to well-being strategies.
• Humanitus educates professionals and/or volunteers for humanitarian action, and raises awareness of active citizenship in schools and at work.

In addition to these main projects, we have developed an entire internal Volunteer Program and belong to the Social Network of Matosinhos and Valongo.

Currently, our team consists of two full-time people: Project Coordination and Marketing.

We favor professional volunteering, which is why our governing bodies are made up of volunteers.

Budget and due dates

Based on the acquisition of support material, we resorted to the Valliscare company website to create our budget.

We request €1000 in order to cover the fees charged by the PPL .

Thus, the campaign should end at the end of July, so that later we can make the acquisition (adapting the budget to the support obtained).
