Kêlê is a social project whose aim is to reduce school failure in the community of Neves, in São Tomé and Príncipe, from July 2018.

The population of São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the youngest in the world, where over 62% of people are under 24 years old. Although education is one of the priority sectors of the country, school failure is a major obstacle to its development. Currently, 71% of the children who enrolled in the 7th grade did not complete high school.

Based on these circumstances, Kêlê proposes to reduce this school failure among children with ages between 6 and 12 years old, through an EAC (extracurricular activity camp), using non-formal education methodologies. The implementation of the activities, such as sports, artistic expressions and educational games, aims to strengthen four key competencies (self-knowledge, self-motivation, determination and resilience) in order to ensure children´s interest and commitment towards school.

Kêlê believes that children are the main changemakers. For this reason, Kêlê strives to develop the key competencies referred above, and help the children reach their full potential, achieve a successful educational path and play an active role in their surrounding community.

About the author

The Kêlê team is composed by five changemakers: Inês Monteiro, Joana Miranda, Madalena Collares Pereira, Maria Rodrigues and Marta Sá.

We are part of a non-governmental development organization (NGDO), which works in the area of education for development in São Tomé and Príncipe, called WACT - We are changing together.

We believe that it is possible to be and to make change. We are passionate about developing and enlightening children's competencies and their capacity as active participants of the society.

For this reason, we believe that through teamwork and our ability to adapt to different circumstances situations, it will be possible to make Kêlê a successful project.

Budget and due dates

In order to achieve our goals, we need to raise the mentioned amount of funds as a way to cover the following costs:

Art material
Supplies for educational games
Sports Equipment
Shirts for children

We need this amount by July 13th 2018.
