A home for Kapulana-San

Request for funds to maintain my home and workspace so Kapulana-San can move forward.

Hi, my name is Elda Joaquim and I'm crowdfunding for two reasons that are intertwined.

Maybe you know me because of Kapulana-San, the brand I created when I started to undertake.

Maybe they don't know that I have a chronic disease called Myasthenia Gravis and that because of it it has been very difficult for me to keep a job in recent years and I was fired at the beginning of the pandemic because I had a relapse in the previous months and was on sick leave.

Due to this situation some of my house rent has been delayed, I have been doing my best to pay the arrears but now I am at risk of being evicted.

After the pandemic I decided to dedicate myself only to Kapulana-San so I could work on something I really love and create my own business, which I do from my home things are going well but I still can't live comfortably.

My entire health and business support network is in the Lisbon area.

I created this crowdfunding not only to be able to keep my house but also my place of work because losing where I live means having to stop Kapulana-San indefinitely.

Kapulana-San is a project that aims to mix cultures and zero textile waste through the creation of kimonos that mix Africa and Japan using new, vintage, deadstock and recycled fabrics from existing pieces (upcycling) all pieces pieces of fabric are later used in accessories or traded with other designers.

All pieces are unique and handcrafted.

At the moment I need €4000 by July 16th, not only to be able to pay the rent in arrears but also to be able to invest in the necessary materials to move Kapulana-San forward.

I thank anyone who can help and as soon as my financial situation allows it, I intend to give back the help I received, to one or more people who are in a difficult situation or who are entrepreneurs like me and need help with their projects.

Elda Joaquim, born in Mozambique, great-granddaughter of Indians, granddaughter and daughter of Mozambicans, came to Portugal shortly before turning 3, accompanied by her mother and sister

The roots and cultural diversities are a source of inspiration. I found in fashion a way to mix the cultures I grew up with, and all the ones I get to know.

I have always been in love with Mozambican capulanas, the passion for Japanese kimonos, the admiration for Japanese textile culture, especially with regard to non-waste”, and also for everything we can do to save and preserve the planet came a little later and thus Kapulana-San was born.

Kapulanaさん Kapulana San uses a mixture of culture between the textile material of capulanas from Africa and the fundamental and traditional piece of Japan that is the Kimono, its motto is acceptance is miscegenation and zero waste.

With the motto of mixing cultures and finding common points and acceptance initially between Africa and Japan and in the future other cultures but always with Africa and Japan as a base.

And also the No piece of fabric is to small - no piece of fabric is wasted, with this idea in mind all fabric scraps (capulanas or not) are sewn or braided and used to create kimonos (one size fits all), suitcases, jewelery tags or bags for sending parts.

The fabrics can be new (small quantities and collection surpluses) or upcycling, also inspired by Boro (a technique used in Japan in which scraps of fabric are used, which are together and dyed in indigo, thus creating new pieces).

The project embraces the development of products with unique and exclusive pieces due to the factors previously discussed, as it also privileges hand work (craftsmanship)
