About the author
The Grupo Desportivo da Ilha was founded on 2 May 1975 with the clear objective of promoting the practice of sports, both formal and informal, in the region of the Island, with football being the main catalyst for its dynamics from the beginning. In recent years, Grupo Desportivo da Ilha has become the club with the most athletes registered with the FPF in the district of Leiria, despite being located in a town with less than 2,000 inhabitants. The club is especially dedicated to the practice of football, futsal, beach football and walking football. The club is a national reference in the promotion of women's sports, having been used as an example in a recent study by the Portugal Football Observatory due to the growth in the number of female athletes in football and futsal, which now exceeds 35% of the total number of registered female athletes in the GDIlha sports (it was reported in several national media outlets). Grupo Desportivo da Ilha is also a reference as a football training entity, having received this certification from the Portuguese Football Federation and is a 3-star training entity certified by the FPF. In addition to federated sports, the Club also promotes informal sports practice in modalities such as Beach Volleyball, Beach FutVolley or Esports.
