This album celebrates in music the consolidation of Freedom and Democracy in Portugal

Art is the greatest expression of celebration and recording of great moments in history.

With this 50 Years of Freedom and Democracy in Portugal album, by the Associação Musical Lisboa Cantat, we aim to celebrate the most significant moment in Portugal's recent history: the Revolution of 25 April 1974 and the consolidation of Freedom and Democracy in our country. Through choral music and unique testimonies, we celebrate and record for future generations the values that shaped our society and our collective identity.

The idea was to bring together some songs that alluded to the period leading up to and after the 25th of April. We were inspired by Fernando Lopes-Graça's 8th notebook, which is a less well-known notebook, and then brought together four songs by Zeca Afonso harmonized by Alfredo Teixeira. We also brought together some regional Portuguese songs because they have some political symbolism and the message they convey is in line with the idea of the revolution and the period that followed until the consolidation of Democracy.

We would like to challenge you to collaborate with us in this crowdfunding so that we can complete this project, and, in the end, you can hear us singing this repertoire and feel the enormous power that these songs still have today.

Your support will be essential!

About the author

Coro de Câmara Lisboa Cantat

We are a non-profit Cultural Association dedicated to the interpretation of choral music.
Our discography includes five volumes from the collection Portuguese Composers 20th/21st century, already published, as well as two double albums dedicated exclusively to the a cappella choral music of Fernando Lopes Graça.
In addition to these editions, which are projects of the Associação Musical Lisboa Cantat, we highlight the recording of the world premiere of the Requiem à Memória de Passos Manuel, by Eurico Carrapatoso, and in collaboration with the Segreis de Lisboa, the Mass and Responsories by Carlos Seixas.

We also highlight the recording of a DVD, for our Public Television, with the inauguration concert of the restoration of the six Organs of the Royal Basilica of Mafra, with the collaboration of the Lisbon Cantat Symphonic Choir, on the occasion of the Europa Nostra Award 2012 conservation prize.

Budget and due dates

The project has the following phases:

  • The studio recording with the Chamber Choir took place in October 2024.
  • Editing and mastering will take place until the end of March 2025.
  • CD launch with the presence of composers and several individuals linked to music and the social area, at the end of April.
  • Distribution will be done online on networks such as Spotify.
  • We also chose to produce a small edition on physical CD.

The campaign aims to raise support to finance part of the production costs of this record edition, worth €3,500, which corresponds to around 40% of the total cost of the project.
