Emergency Response to COVID-19: Vulnerable families in Camarate

In view of the urgency and growing requests for help after the arrival of COVID-19 in the neighborhoods where we already worked with local partners, in Camarate (Loures), Ajuda em Ação will move forward with an emergency response that includes food support for 32 families during 3 months. All this action is being prepared and planned rigorously with the Camarate D. Nuno Álvares Pereira School Group, the Association of Parents, Guardians and Friends of the D. Nuno Álvares Pereira School Group (APDNAP), the Camarate Parish Council, Unhos e Apelação, a social worker, among other parties involved. After ensuring a rigorous process of surveying needs and signaling the most needy families, we will act to have an effective impact on the lives of those most in need.

As we believe in a differentiating and trusting aid to beneficiaries, this support will be provided through the delivery of a monthly shopping card with an ammount of 100 euros. This card is only for food and basic necessities and spent at a local supermarket. This process will be monitored by the entities involved and reinforced with psychosocial support, with the families. In this joint intervention, we seek respect for families and their vulnerability, rigor and adequacy in a differentiating response and responsible and long-term intervention. Who we are?

We are Ayuda en Acción , an international NGO based in Spain, which has been working for 39 years to eradicate poverty and inequality, helping to improve the nutrition, health and education of almost 1.5 million children and their families. Today, we operate in 20 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia and also in Spain and Portugal, where we have developed, at this stage, emergency responses in the context of the pandemic.

Ajuda em Ação Portugal has intervened in Portugal since the beginning of 2020, directly in communities in the national territory through the “Aqui Também” program (as in Spain) currently in Camarate, Loures, a place with a high rate of poverty and social exclusion.

The projects we develop in Portugal have local partners: the Camarate School Group and the Associação Jovem Despertar and cover more than 1,200 children and adults . Our joint intervention has as objectives: the inclusion and educational equity through extra-school activities (yoga, meditation, among many others); combating absenteeism and school dropout; empowerment and female empowerment (workshops and meetings of mothers / women in the community).

When COVID-19 appeared, our projects were redirected towards responding to the pandemic. We couldn't stop. The needs assessment for our first emergency response in Portugal began, as we do in so many other countries, as was the case in Mozambique, in the 2019 cyclones.

Budget and due dates

Food support for 32 vulnerable families for 3 months

- Average value for each monthly / family card - 100 eur (adjusted to the household)

- Amount needed to support 32 families for 3 months: 9,600 euros

Support will be provided through the delivery of a monthly shopping card with an average a ammount of 100 euros, in the community supermarket, trusting this management to families who will know what the greatest needs are. The total value of this emergency response in the food of those most in need, in this community that we know, amounts to 9,600 euros (3,200 euros per month).

The action intends to start with the first stage of delivering cards and accompanying families in late April or early May, according to a rigorous preparation of the entire response. The following phases will take place in the following two months.

• * Note on tax deduction: Ajuda em Ação Portugal is in the process of acquiring permanent representation from an international foundation, as well as being a temporary entity, registered legally and with projects underway in our country. As such, only after the constitution of the aforementioned permanent representation will we have the recognition of our legal personality as an international Foundation to be highlighted in the Portuguese legal system. In this sense, not only because we are a foreign foundation, but also because our framework in the light of the Portuguese patronage tax regime, can only be defined after the constitution of the permanent representation, the donations now granted will not have associated tax benefits, so we apologize.
