Rediscover Cavalum

The rediscovery of the Cavalum River began in total confinement in March 2020 and since then we have never stopped! Join us, lets restart this ecosystem!

Over the last two years, the Cavalum Association has been joining forces in the conservation and ecological restoration of the Valley and the Cavalum river, through the removal and control of invasive species, removal of brambles and MSW (Urban Solid Waste) from the river and of the trail, construction of shelters for the promotion of fauna in the Valley, planting of indigenous trees, among others.

Until then, we always used our personal tools, those of family and friends and, more recently, some that were donated to us by partners.

As our project evolved, the level of demand increased, as did the number of volunteers and also environmental responsibility. Having said that, we have reached a time when we need more material and for it to be better and more suitable for all the types of jobs we have.

The value defined for this campaign allows us to purchase: a bioshredder , as there is a lot of green waste that we cannot reuse (brambles, foliage of some weeds) and, due to the difficult access to carry out the transport of this waste, with this tool it will be possible that these remain as organic matter in the soil; a chainsaw so we could cut down some dead and fallen trees; a brushcutter to eliminate denser vegetation, when necessary; a hole opener for our planting actions; two phototrap cameras to continue our fauna survey work in the Cavalum Valley; six fishing overalls so that we can collect garbage and vegetation from inside the river and so that we can carry out some studies on it; and, finally, various tools (such as pruning shears, axes, pitchforks, rakes, among others) so that we have material for all the volunteers who help clean up the Valley.

About the author

The “Projeto Cavalum” was born in March 2020, when Portugal closed its doors for the first time due to COVID-19. Hygienic walks through Nature became more important in those days and the little that the Cavalum River apparently had to give was worth a lot. During the walks, many residues were found in the bed and on the banks of the river and it was verified that the existing old paths were impassable since, over the years, there was a forgetfulness of that place by the population. It was notorious that the ecosystem of that natural space was quite altered, unbalanced and fragile.

It was at that time that a group of friends, colleagues and strangers got together, completely voluntarily, with the same objective: to restore the ecosystem of Vale do Cavalum.

Work began by collecting waste along the banks and then actions were taken to clean up the dense vegetation on the few existing paths, with the aim of being able to delimit a pedestrian trail along the river.

In 2022, with a solid working group, we created the Association for the Defense of the Environment - Cavalum.
The Association is made up of students, designers, factory workers, engineers, miners, biologists, cleaners, mechanics, teachers, people from various and different professions, all with the same desire to change our routines and even our attitudes as human beings. dedicated to protecting the environment.
