Atelier Montessori - Educating for Peace

What if Education is the most effective way to live in a peaceful society, where we all live together with peace and respect for each other and for the planet?

After a few years working as professionals in the Education field, we found that “traditional education” did not respond to the needs of children, who showed lack of motivation, inappropriate behavior, agitation, lack of concentration, passivity and frustration. Many families have shared with us the same feeling regarding their children.

Tired of doing nothing in the face of these facts, we began a discovery journey of new pedagogies and we particularly identified ourselves with the Montessori Method regarding the respect that exists for the pace and interest of children and for the appreciation of essential life skills, such as independence, critical thinking, being proactive, love and respect for yourself and everything that surrounds you.

Thus was born the Association Montessori of Setúbal, with the objective of intervening in society, in three aspects:

• Children – through the opening of an educational space rich in sensory activities and based on the Montessori method, where the adult has a passive role and guides the child in their learning.
• Parents and professionals – through workshops, trainings and meetings, bring another perspective on children and Education.
• Resources – provide resources and materials in Portuguese, suitable for each age group and that serve as support for educators and families.

Through these three areas of intervention, we intend to contribute to a critical, peaceful, happy and respectful society, capable of dealing with any adversity.

Filipa Almeida

Mother of two children and primary school teacher. It was during an international work experience in São Tomé that she began to question the current educational system. Attended several trainings in the field of Education. She is an AMI Montessori Guide 3-6 and AMI Montessori Assistant 6-12.

Ricardo Saraiva

Graduated in Computer Engineering, currently works as a software developer. He believes that Education is the key to change society and through working directly with children, we will achieve a peaceful future.

Lara Pinto

Mother of two children, Master in Pre-School Education and Primary School Basic Education, AMI Montessori Assistant 3-6. She did several trainings in the field of Education.

Montessori emerged as a response to her professional concerns, which, as a mother, have intensified.

Inês Almeida

Master in Pre-School Education and Primary School Basic Education, AMI Montessori Assistant 0-3 and 3-6. She began to question herself about pedagogical practices in education during her initial training, which led her to undertake various training courses in the area of Education and to get to know other alternative methodologies.

Ana Margarida Custodio

Master in Pre-School Education and AMI Montessori Assistant 0-3. She is operations manager at AMS - Association Montessori of Setúbal. She joined this project with the aim of contributing to a more child-centered education.

Luis Xavier

Software developer with experience in managing associations. He believes that for a society that wants to be in constant evolution, its teaching base will have to evolve, making room for new teaching methodologies, namely Montessori, with proven evidence for a greater and better child development.

Budget and due dates

The months of july, august and mid-september will be used to carry out works in the space and to equip it with Montessori furniture and materials.

We plan to open the atelier, expecting no problems with the works, during the month of september/october 2021.

To move forward with this dream, we count on your help to accomplish the following:

• Space rehabilitation works: 600,00€
• Plumber works: 1000,00€
• Floor and baseboard: 950,00€
• Washbasin for WC: 23,99€
• Electric material: 149,26€
