Classical, jazz, fado - Lisbon needs an Academy like this!

The Amateur Music Academy is a secular institution of music teaching in Lisbon. We want to prove life, launching new initiatives: courses and workshops of fado and jazz, electric guitar and choral singing.

The Academy of Amateurs of Music has a 135-year history, along which it has helped to form generations of Portuguese musicians, having excelled in teaching young adults who are recovered to the musical world by entering new musical careers with success. It was here that names like Carlos Bica (in jazz), Joana Amendoeira (in fado) or Pedro Ayres de Magalhães (in pop music) began their careers and gave new directions to their lives.

Throughout his life, and despite the anchorage in classical teaching. demanding of the music, the Academy did not stop to embrace new styles. It is in this spirit that, despite the serious financial situation of the Academy, partly because of the fixed costs that the location in the center of Lisbon has forced (the AAM leases its space), we intend to give new life to the Academy, proving to the community of Lisbon that the Academy is an important part of the living heritage of the center of Lisbon. Among the new initiatives that the funding by "crowdfunding" aims to support, they are:

- Jazz workshop. A ten-session workshop dedicated to history, jazz techniques. It is intended that this workshop could become the embryo of a new full jazz course at the Academy

- Fado Workshop. A course plan for those wishing to begin the art of the Lisbon song, with the support of eminent fadistas and historians of fado

- Course of electric guitar. An introduction to electric guitar for anyone who wants to try the instrument.

- History course of pop / rock music. A course dedicated to the history of music dictates light, with a practical and with an emphasis on the history of national pop.

- Coral Days: One-day courses for beginner amateur singers, aimed at initiating and encouraging choral singing, demystifying it and leading to a wider audience, performed by experienced corps maestros from the Academy's body.

About the author

In 1884 a group of members, founders of the Guilherme Cossoul Club orchestra, formed the previous year, decided to create an academy with the purpose of "spreading the taste for good music through regular courses, symphonic concerts, lectures". In August of the same year, King D. Luis I, who accepted to be Honorary President, grants to the Academy of Amateurs of Music the title of Real.

In the XXI century, important names of the musical scene in Portugal have been recognized by AAM, along with names associated with the Academy such as the musicologist Mário Vieira de Carvalho and the Architect Romeu Pinto da Silva, composers Maria de Lurdes Martins, Carlos Marecos, Sérgio Azevedo, Eurico Carrapatoso, musicologists, Rui VieiraNery, Vanda de Sá, Teresa Cascudo and Maria José Artiaga, or among many others, the names of popular music and Jazz such as Pedro Ayres de Magalhães, Teresa Salgueiro and Carlos Bica.
