Associação Move-te Mais is an independent and non-profit volunteering association, founded and constituted by students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon.
The objective of Missões de Saúde (Health Missions) is to send teams of volunteers to Cape Verde (S. Antão), Angola and Brazil, where they will support our local partners, trying to reduce the local needs by promoting projects of education for health and prevention, cardiovascular screenings and clinical counseling, healthcare and medication (according to our possibilities and the characteristics of each mission).
Partners:
S. Antão, Cape Verde: City Councils of Porto Novo and Paúl.
Gungo, Angola: Ondjoyetu Missionary Group
Milagres, Brazil: AMI/ACOM
What do we do?
S. Antão, Cape Verde: Prevention and cardiovascular screenings, medication/medical supplies provisions, education for health to the general population, of all ages and covering various villages of Porto Novo and Paúl. Estimated population: 20 000. This is an independent project organized by Move-te Mais with logistical support of the referred city councils.
Gungo, Angola: Education for health and health/medical care to the population of Gungo, an area of more than 25000 inhabitants, otherwise, without access to medical care. Training rural health promoters and traditional midwives in order to develop skills to deal with common diseases and other health issues. This is another independent project of our own in tight cooperation with the Ondjoyetu’s missionaries. Our volunteers join their routines so that they can fit in the community.
Milagres, Brazil: Through a partnership with AMI and the local partner ACOM, we have the opportunity to send 1 or 2 volunteers for an internship in Milagres, Ceará, to Hospital Maternidade Madre Rosa Gatorno, supporting the locals in healthcare and also education for health. Here, our volunteers act according to AMI’s (Assistência Médica Internacional) rules and codes of action.
Are we needed?
We have been developing these health missions for the past 1 (Brazil) and 2 years (Cape Verde and Angola) and our partners accepted to sign a protocol to officialize this bond because of the importance our work has on field!
People we contact with always ask for our volunteers to return and that request is quite sincere. It makes us believe in our work, these Health Missions, are priceless for us and for them, both in health and humanitarian terms.
So, we don’t give up! The continuity of our interventions is our biggest goal in Health Missions.
But we can’t do it alone… We need you all!
How can you help?
Our goal is to send several teams of volunteers to different destinations from July to September 2013:
- 2 to 6 volunteers to S. Antão, Cape Verde (1 to 2 months; number of volunteers and duration depending on funds available); budget: 850€ per volunteer
- 2 volunteers to Gungo, Angola (2 months): budget: 1300€ per volunteer
- 1 to 2 volunteers to Milagres, Brazil (2 months): budget: 1500€ per volunteer
To accomplish these missions we need € for flights, food, eventual transportation and housing on field (when it’s not offered by our partners), medical supplies/medication, vaccination and other related expenses (e.g. visas, insurance, etc.).
This is why we need you: to help us sending our volunteers, bringing health to those in need!
It takes only 5 minutes, a few € and spreading the word to your friends and you too can be part of these Missões de Saúde, making them happen!
