Umundu Lx 2022 - Collective festival for sustainable transformation

In 2022, the World Environment Day takes place under the slogan “Only one Earth”. This is a special inspiration for the organizing team of Festival Umundu Lx 2022, carrying the name “Umundu” the idea that humanity is a global community.

50 years ago, the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment recognized that the human being is both a creature and a shaper of his environment, underlining the importance of environmental conservation and restoration through 26 principles that have not lost their importance. Following the conference, better known as the Stockholm Conference, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was established, based in Nairobi, Kenya, and World Environment Day took place for the first time on 5 of June 1974.

However, we know that not all the world's population is affected by the ecological crisis in the same way and that responsibilities are not shared. While it is primarily the communities of the global South that suffer the consequences of global warming due to the continuous increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, it is the populations of the global North and the elites of the countries of the global South who are responsible for most part of carbon emissions and the exhaustion of natural resources, the production of garbage in its most diverse forms, and the destruction of ecosystems and the loss of biodiversity. To stay within planetary boundaries, it will be necessary to radically transform our life styles and the world's socio-economic system.

About the author

The Umundu Lx Festival ( https://www.umundu.pt/) was inspired by the Umundu Festival in Dresden, an initiative by Patrick Ribeiro and Sascha Kornek that has been running since 2009. In 2019, after returning to Lisbon, Patrick launched the challenge of organizing a festival in Lisbon to a group of enthusiasts who were joined by many new volunteers to continue on this collective journey.

A pensar o Festival Umundu Lx 2022...

During the first two editions of the Umundu Lx Festival, in 2020 and 2021, thousands of people participated in almost 200 events, organized by hundreds of promoters, despite the limitations imposed by the covid-19 pandemic (more about the last festival here ).

At the opening event of Umundu Lx 2021 we told the whole story of Umundu:

The results of the previous editions of Umundu Lx are also reflected in the number of participations: With an average of 15 people per event in person and online in the first year and an average of 30 people per event in the second year, there were hundreds of events that left the message of the need for urgent change in discussions, lectures, talks, and workshops, self-organized by over a hundred collectives and citizen groups.

In addition to the affection received by those who supported us in the past, we are also happy that many organizations have joined us to push the proposal of sustainable transformation. Thus, the last two campaigns were able to achieve the objective in raising funds for the Umundu Lx Festival 2020 and 2021. The 3rd edition of the Umundu Lx Festival will take place in Lisbon and surroundings, in person, but also online, in the virtual space.
