Mrs. Olívia needs a decent house to raise her grandkids and give some comfort to her family. The finalization of this house relies on us now. Help us realize this dream!
Mrs. Olívia lives in Amarante. She's a 52 year-old, married, mother to two and a grandmother to four. She has a big heart and she shelters in her house three of her underage grandchildren, to avoid institutionalization.
Her household consists of her mother-in-law, dependent husband, son and the three grandchildren of whom she is responsible for, receiving a monthly income of 560€ to support all seven. She also pays a 200€ monthly debt incurred by a close family member.
The youngest grandchildren, 5 and 10 years old, need psychological counseling and speech theraphy to which all family allowance they receive goes to. All grandchildren are inserted in the public education system and the oldest granddaughter is distinguished in her results.
Unfortunately, as a result of a depression, her husband, about 5 years ago, set fire to the house where they lived, a crime for which he was tried and sentenced to an effective 4-year prison sentence. By divine grace, there were no victims, and today the husband lives with his family in the damaged house, with treatment for his depression, that overloads household expenses.
In short, in a burned down house, with 63.70m2 without any air conditioning, in S. Brás de Telões live seven people, including three minors.
In Portugal the risk of poverty rate is 17.3% and, in terms of housing, the numbers speak for themselves:
- 156 203 housing are in degraded buildings
- 500 886 houses are overpopulated
- 326 000 houses without at least one of the basic services, sanitation, water and electricity
In Mrs. Olívia's case, the Manuel António da Mota Foundation (FMAM) supported with 10.000€, the family can contribute with 7.200€ which they'll pay to Habitat For Humanity Portugal (HFHP) within twenty years. Only 6.456,55€ left to be able to rehabilitate this house.
In this sense, HFHP, in partnership with FMAM, appeals to the solidarity of everyone to raise the remaining amount that will allow to complete the work and cover the added costs of the present fundraising.
