A Castle for Carolina

Carolina is 17 years old and lives in Mouronho, Tábua municipality. On October 29th, 2023, her life changed. When she was watching a jeep tour in Pedra da Sé, she was hit by one of the cars, leaving her paraplegic.

Our lives can change in a second. We share the story of Carolina, our “Pedrinha Preciosa” (Precious Stone)!

Carolina is 17 years old and lives in Mouronho, Tábua municipality. On October 29th, 2023, her life changed. When she was watching a jeep tour in Pedra da Sé, she was hit by one of the cars, leaving her paraplegic.

Now, the Coimbra Pediatric Hospital is her home. It was there that she discovered that she could not walk, as she had fractured her spine. The wheelchair is now her companion.

Carolina, with her strong will, takes life in a positive way. A student of the professional Sports course, Carolina dreams of being a physical education teacher and physiotherapist. But now, her focus is on rehabilitation and getting out of the hospital! Carolina, a courageous, confident girl with the strength to win, always with a smile on her face, needs our help. Her house does not have the necessary conditions to be able to return to her mother and father, who just want to have their girl close to them.

That's why we're here, to appeal for her donation, to help us build Carolina Castle, our Pedrinha Preciosa!

We want to provide the best quality of life for Carolina. We want her to have her space in the comfort of her home adapted to her new reality.

About the author

Cooperativa Pedrinhas is a Non-Governmental Organization for People with Disabilities (NGDO), non-profit, which emerged in 2018 with the mission of supporting children and young people with oncological or equally serious illnesses.

“Um Castelo – Pedrinho a Pedrinha” is our biggest challenge. Our objective is to rehabilitate the housing of families in need so that children and young people, who are our “Precious Pedrons”, can have their Castle with all the conditions that allow them to live in the comfort of their home, with the people they love most. Therefore, we physically intervene in the beneficiaries' homes, improving living conditions, such as accessibility, thermal comfort and other needs.

Pedrinhas was born from the joy and energy of Pedrinho who, for around five years, lived with the crazy cell disease, which ended up taking him from this world at 10 years and 364 days.

Pedrinho left a lot of love and creative imagination, his “Pedrinhongos”, which led to the emergence of our Cooperative. We are a true “Pedrinhástica Family” with a desire to make children happy and never give up on dreaming in their “Castelos” (homes).

Budget and due dates

Intervention in Carolina's house with Expansion and Construction Works worth 70 thousand euros

• Preparation of access to the patio of the existing dwelling;
• Filling and correction of the threshold level for access to the public place – creation of an accessible way to Carolina;
• Demolition of pre-existing chicken coops;
• Construction of an expansion area for an accessible bedroom, sanitary installation, living room and open kitchen;
• The work is expected to be completed in 6 months;
• The additional amounts will be applied to exterior arrangements so that Carolina can enjoy the outdoor space of her home.
