Lucky is a 3-year-old dog who became paraplegic after a herniated disc. We are asking for help covering the costs of an intensive physical therapy program, which is his best chance to gain some independence.
Lucky is a 3-year-old dog who became paraplegic after suffering a herniated disc. He was adopted by me, a veterinarian, because his previous family was considering euthanizing him. He underwent surgery, but unfortunately, the injury was too severe and he never regained his deep sensation. This means he won't be able to walk in the true sense of the word again, but there's a chance he'll acquire the so-called "spinal walking" skill.
Spinal walking is the ability to take more than 10 steps without falling. It's an automatic movement, like a reflex. This phenomenon occurs because the spinal cord has "automatic circuits" (called central pattern generators) that can produce walking movements without commands from the brain. But for these circuits to work, it takes a lot of training and repetition. Lucky is undergoing an intensive physical therapy program at the Arrábida Animal Rehabilitation Center and may need up to four months to achieve spinal walking. The monthly fee for this program is 740 euros, so we'd like to thank anyone who can contribute to his opportunity to regain some autonomy and quality of life.
