Julieta is a "therapist" dog, She is very sweet and kind. She was adopted in 2017 in the association Sourepatas. She suffers from severe bilateral hip dysplasia. She need 2 new paws and count on your help!
I met Julieta in 2017, on a visit to the shelter of the Sourepatas association. It was love at first sight for that crazy happy dog, who attacked us with compulsive licks . I didn't stop thinking about her and a few weeks later I ended up adopting her. I soon discovered that in addition to all the sweetness, Julieta had a spectacular intelligence and ability to learn. A few months after adopting her, we embarked on an adventure together: certification in Animal Assisted Interventions at the Ânimas association. Passion gave way to pride, to pure love. Julieta is not just a dog, she is not just family, she is a "therapist" dog, and with her sweetness and patience she distributes affection, makes smiles and helps children with special needs.
In 2018 we found out that she has bilateral hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is a degenerative joint disease that affects walking and causes a lot of pain. Since then, despite the severity of the dysplasia and already having arthrosis, we have controlled it with sporadic chondroprotectants and anti-inflammatory drugs and she has been leading a normal life without major complaints and without pain, apparently (she doesn't speak and dogs are great at hiding their pain, so we don't know for sure). But now "crises" have become more frequent and things like getting on the couch or in the car have become difficult for Julieta. When she goes for a walk, she limps. She can´t do more animal-assisted therapy.
We looked for solutions and we investigated, we found that there are several options for Julieta. She could take medication for the rest of her life, acupuncture, gold implants, etc ... but the problem would always be there and it would get worse over time. She could make a femur head ostectomy , but this procedure severely alters the biomechanics of the joint and she could continue to have pain and need medication. Besides, she already has a significant loss of muscle mass that would greatly condition her recovery.
We heard about the total hip prosthesis and traveled to Lisbon with Julieta to meet Dr. Luis Chambel from Vetoeiras who informed us about the advantages of this procedure. We realized that the total hip prosthesis is the procedure that is most likely to guarantee a life without pain, a normal life for Julieta. Recovery is much faster and long-term medication is not required. The success rate is very high. We saw videos of dogs walking the day after the surgery, we saw videos of dogs running and jumping a few months after the surgery.
There was no doubt about what we wanted for Julieta, what she deserves. But the procedure is very expensive, very far from our financial possibilities. Each surgery (since she has dysplasia in both hips) will cost about 3500 €. It is a lot of money and it took a lot of thinking, pondering. The heart spoke louder and, motivated by the words of support from so many friends who were willing to help, we decided to proceed with the surgery. It will be held at VetOeiras by dr Luis Chambel, we still don't know on what date.
The total costs are around 7000 €, and in this crowdfunding we ask for help for one of the surgeries.
We really thank for the help of all those who want to give Julieta some new paws, which will allow her to run, jump and continue to help the special children who come across her. We chose to use a crowdfunding platform so that the process is as honest and transparent as possible.
All the help that comes will make a difference and will be received with great emotion and gratitude. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your solidarity, friendship, support and help.
kisses from Juju
