‘Alto Bairro’ is a documentary by director Rui Simões that focuses on Bairro Alto, a central district of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. It aims to raise awareness between both the Portuguese and the foreign public to Bairro Alto’s emerging social and economic transformation. The goal of the project is to share the history of this heterogeneous neighborhood and to create a dialogue between its people. From tourists to residents. From old ladies to young visitors. From fashion shops to hidden artisans. From modern graffiti to traditional parades. From dealers to cops. From artists to dreamers. By day, by night. It’s all about discovering the stories and people that Bairro Alto is made of. Rui wants to give them something that makes us all think about our heritage and reflect on the choices for the future of Lisbon.
We need you!
The proposed amount of 5.000 euros will be assigned to the production of the documentary. There will be a 3 month deadline, so as to allow for a release of the premiere in December – when we can all celebrate the 500th birthday of Bairro Alto. After that, we hope it will make it through the film festival circuit and be released on TV, in theaters and on DVD/Blu-Ray. We also want to hear your own stories about Bairro Alto.

About the author
The Real Fiction is a film production and audiovisual, headquartered in Lisbon. Founded 25 years ago by director and producer Rui Simões, initially to produce their own films over the years, been expanding its business to other filmmakers and other areas of film and audiovisual.
Today, his work is recognized, especially in areas where other producers paid less attention, particularly in the production of videos and documentaries related to the arts (dance, theater, music, visual arts), to social issues (homelessness, social exclusion, the elderly, immigrants), the production of projects for young filmmakers and, more recently, on issues relating to Africa, especially with the Portuguese-speaking countries, where in recent years produced several documentaries, many of them in co-production with producers locations.
More recently we have expanded our business to the distribution and editing, which allowed us to get our films to cinemas, and stores by selling DVD.
Rui Simões directed theaward-winning documentary ‘The Good People of Portugal’, a unique and vivid account of the 1974 Revolution in Portugal. He also directed ‘Cova da Moura Island’, a documentary about a neighborhood known for the idea of violence and sheer poverty, where against all odds he discovered a beautiful fight against social exclusion. With a degree in film and television studies from the Institut des Arts de Diffusion in Brussels, Rui Simões has worked extensively both as a director and a producer. His Lisbon-based production company, Real Ficção, has for the past twenty years been the hub for the production and distribution of numerous documentary, fiction, and animation films. He is also a multimedia teacher and educator.
