It is urgent to start the treatment of bone filling in the jaws (upper - 70% and lower - 40%). The consequences are various, such as: optic nerves, stomach (deficit chewing) and will even affect weight and muscle mass.

Chronic periodontitis is a bacterial infection that arises as a result of the progression of a previous state of gingivitis, untreated or poorly treated, progressing more or less slowly. Chronic periodontitis is characterized by a slow or moderate loss of alveolar bone , predominantly in the horizontal direction. Chronic periodontitis is one of the most common types of periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis can be localized, affecting only certain areas, or generalized. It is more frequent in adults, but it can also be seen in children (infantile periodontitis) and its etiology is usually associated with the presence of tartar (“stone in the teeth”). As for its severity, it depends on the degree of progression already reached, and consequent destruction of the support tissue, which can go from 1 to 2 mm or be already greater than 5 mm.

The tooth is divided between crown and root, and is structured based on the bone that constitutes it. When talking about bone loss, what is at stake is the resistance of such tissue, which is weakened. The fact is that the wear comes from the moment when there is a dysfunction in the tissue of the mouth, compromising the bone that is around the teeth.

After the necessary exams for the best treatment, the option of bone filling in the upper jaw remains, as it was suddenly 70%

About the author

Susana Neves, 48, resident in Sintra

Due to inadequate treatment, done some time ago, periodontitis has evolved a lot, affecting the upper jaw bone, and it is currently only 2 mm thick.

Now, the treatment will have to be bone filling to prevent the teeth from falling out completely. This treatment is not common practice in the public service (NHS) because there is a deficit in stomatology and for various reasons known to the general public, it would take about 2 to 3 years on the waiting list. In particular, by raising 4 thousand, I will be able to start treatment immediately (surgery) and the rest (up to 12 thousand) will be paid by me in installments to the clinic.

Budget and due dates

I intend to raise 4 million euros to be able to start the treatment, which will be a total of 12 thousand, for a period of 9 months
