We are a group of Bachelor and Master’s students from ESMAE and ESE, from IPPorto, and we address to you in order to petition for your collaboration with our presentation project that will take place in the 45th International Viola Congress in Rotterdam.
This presentation is based on a Dissertation: “The influence of Lionel Tertis in the Flowering of Viola Repertoire in England in the 20th century - a proposal of cataloguing”, that was made by our colleague Ana Alves during her Master in Music (Viola - Artistic Interpretation).
It’s a pioneer theme that combined an analysis, selection, compilation and organization of information that resulted in a catalogue with 122 works for Viola that have a direct relation with Lionel Tertis (considered by many the father of Viola).
The Viola has been an underestimated instrument in the past, however, it’s an instrument with a rich and important history that plays very important parts in orchestra, chamber music repertoire and solo works. There is a big part of the Viola repertoire that remains unknown, and because of this gap, Ana decided to investigate and work this subject on her Dissertation, focused on disclosing some of those pieces.
The Viola Community took interest in this matter, and after we sent a project proposal based on this for the 45th International Viola Congress they have accepted our participation, thence giving us the opportunity to present our project along with world renowned musicians.
The project has 2 parts: the first is a brief presentation of the dissertation, focusing mainly on the catalogue and the second is a performance of some arrangements of pieces present in the catalogue, by the Viola Ensemble from ESMAE.
The Congress will take place in Rotterdam between the 20th and 24th of November, and the Ensemble will be representing Portugal with this project.
However, all this won’t be possible without your help in whatever means you have available - wether they are financial, logistical or even regarding transportation.
