A close look upon what is common. Beyond a temptation of feeling drifted by the enchantment of what one regards as different and exotic

In order to face the restrictions imposed by the current confinement measures, we decided to share a series of videos to show you a little of the universe behind the creation of the show. In this way, we want to materialize our desire to bring the number of supporters closer tothe creative structure that we are getting through Crowdfunding campaigns.

Within the universe of the show there is a very discreet but very present character, here is his presentation:

What

We started this project with two main goals in mind: to discuss strategies for emigrant integration and to bridge a little bit the gap that separates emigrants from the most elite places of the western world, the rehearsal room and the theatre. Emigrants is part of a bigger project that will, each step of the way, work towards the inclusion of emigrants as part of the creative process. Making sure that they are not perceived as emigrants rather as fellow team players.

The money raised by this crowdfunding campaign will be used to bring as much emigrants as we can closer to our creative process and our show.

Why

After the success of last year’s campaign for Sacalina, we are back to the crowdfunding platforms, willing to extend our community!

We want to share with you how we got to the question - Aren’t we all, in a certain way, migrants?

When we think about migration, what are we thinking about? When we talk about migration, we talk about whom?

Is it the imperialist that invaded other territories or the ones who moved in crowds to rebuild a post-war country? The refugee misnamed since he has no refuge or the political exiled? The woman who left her kids at care of other generation to take care of other people’s kids or the adventuress, curious about other cultures, that leaves carefree in her privileged position?

Do we talk about us or about the others? Or are we talking precisely about that border that separates us, which is also, by own definition, the closest point.

In this project, actually, we don't want to have the word. We left that space to the ones who, in the first person, told us their stories. We want to use our privileged position to echo those experiences eager to be shared.

Using Shaun Tan's book as trampoline, we found in this distancing movement the creative impulse for Emigrants.

“The arrival” is a story without words - the enormous barrier faced by emigrants - of two people that meet and see on each other the same migrant status.

It’s this encounter that we would like to bring to stage, in an investigation process that searches for no answers but aims to reveal the suitable questions. Hopping to provoke resonances in a diversity of interpretations.

How

The story is told by an Giovanna Paiano, from Italy, and Valéria Pérez Léon, from Mexico. They are both professional dancers that accepted the challenge to combine theatrical movement and dance to express the feelings upon arriving at a new place, alternating their positions between the one already installed and the other arriving at an unknown place.

The gesture and the choreographic composition are the result of the references that both interpreters select from the interviews with the different migrants, and also from their own bodies, bodies who become archives of personal migrant experiences. These two processes of creating different movement vocabularies, replace different languages and their confrontation makes visible the integration processes. Mutual recognition, the creation of an empathic relationship and the emotional link established between them, identifies them as part of the same place.

When

The rehearsals took place at Companhia Olga Roriz and an artistic residency of 1 and a half months at LARGO Residências, in Lisbon.

About the author

Who

Manga Theatre is a meeting space for creators, from different backgrounds and experiences, aiming to develop unique plays, in an exercise of rethinking theatre through the Japanese manga impulse.

Our work focuses on the creative process and collective research. From our perspective, the artistic work is a form of investigation, therefore, asking questions is intrinsic to our attitude/philosophy in the rehearsal studio.

Sofia is supporting us offering a technique in line with our work process -The Feldenkrais Method® is an educational practice of somatic movement - an approach that brings attention to the sensations and internal experiences of moving in the present moment. A practice of integration of body & mind as one live subjective process - the whole self. This method was created by Moshe Feldenkrais, and is practiced world wide in an inclusive way. It’s essentially a practice of self-discovery, designed for you to become aware of your habits and compulsive actions, which can develop into pain and organic weakness. This awareness helps you find, within yourself, other choices and alternative behaviours that allow you to experience more comfort and well being, both physical and emotional, in your every day life. Improving balance, coordination, flexibility and strength at any age; enabling one to act spontaneously, confidently and with ease in the world (www.sofilli.co.uk)

    Queridos amig@s apoiantes

    Queridos amig@s apoiantes
