During 3 years, 2000 people weaved 1200 meters of Red Line to cancel the 15 active contracts for the exploration of fossil fuels. Now we are going to ban the exploration of fossil fuels in Portugal!
We have until 2030 to reduce by 50% the emissions of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) if we want to avoid that the average temperature of the planet exceeds the 1.5ºC of warming, in relation to the average temperature registered in the pre-industrial era. Existing fossil fuel reserves are more than enough to exceed 3°C of warming. After having canceled all the 15 active contracts in Portugal, we will guarantee that Portugal is a pioneer and definitively prohibits the exploration of fossil fuels!
We are going to launch a public petition to ban the exploration of fossil fuels in Portugal, hold meetings, direct actions and demonstrations with this objective. We are developing an online game about climate change aimed at younger classes and we will be taking this game and running Red Line workshops in schools.
With this crowdfunding we want to ensure that our activities, for the next year and a half (until December 2022), happen and that the project coordinators do not have to spend more money out of their pockets, as it usually is.
The associated costs are travel, accommodation, weaving materials, promotional materials, the creation of the online game and a payment to the trainers for the workshops in schools.
Linhas Vermelhas numa manifestação em 2019
About the author
Linha Vermelha was created in 2017, in an initial partnership between Climáximo and Academia Cidadã and fought against 15 active contracts for the exploration of fossil fuels in Portugal. For 3 years, we weaved 1200 meters of Red Line, which were knitted by more than 2000 people in schools, demonstrations and other events that we held in public spaces, cafes, haberdashery, markets, senior universities, etc.
We use knitting and weaving arts to weave Red Lines, which represent the 1.5ºC limit of heating that we must not exceed. We teach how to knit, crochet and learn too! We talk about climate change and how it is closely linked to the system we live in, which puts profit above all else, including the limits of the planet.
We understand that the art of weaving (knitting, crochet or macramé) is a very powerful tool to bring people together and create community. We will continue to spread this ancient technique and sensitize people, mobilizing them to fight for climate justice.
At the moment, the campaign is coordinated by Academia Cidadã, and we are 3 people coordinating it. These people cannot devote all their time to the campaign but the time they dedicate is with immense passion, dedication and commitment.
